    Why Now?

    Why Now
The global landmine crisis is worsening. Over 110 million landmines and UXO remain buried across 60+ countries — and in 2023 alone, civilian casualties rose by 22%, with children making up over a third of the victims. Traditional clearance methods are too slow, too dangerous, and too expensive to meet the scale of the challenge.

At the same time, the world is finally ready for a new approach. AI-based navigation, sensor fusion, and rugged drone platforms have matured to the point where fully autonomous demining is now viable. Donor nations are actively seeking innovation. Humanitarian budgets for mine action have crossed €1 billion annually, and Ukraine alone has secured over €1.5B for clearance programs — with an explicit push toward drone and automation solutions.

LAGERTHA is entering at the inflection point: where demand is urgent, technology is field-ready, and partners like UNOPS and national agencies are actively seeking what we’re building.

This isn’t just a window of opportunity. It’s the moment when innovation in demining becomes a moral and operational necessity.
